Football: Wamps can’t keep up, 36-9

Braintree —

Last week was an unusual short week of practice for Braintree and Framingham High football teams due to Yom Kippur.

In addition, both football programs are in growth mode and each was looking for a victory to give their team a much needed, mid-season boost of confidence.

The Framingham Flyers took advantage of two early, first quarter Braintree turnovers to get into the win column with a much-needed 36-9 victory over the Braintree Wamps.

The Flyers improved to 2-3 and the Wamps fell to 2-3 on the season.

“You just can’t spot teams two touchdowns in this league and expect to play catch-up,” said a very disappointed BHS head coach Brian Chamberlain. “Penalties and turnovers will not win ballgames.”

“It’s a huge win for us,” said Framingham coach Gary Doherty. “We had a three-week skid where we played well, but not well enough to win.”

Senior quarterback Greg Finley (11-for-22, 150 passing yards, 3 TDs) accounted for four touchdowns for Framingham.

Braintree finally got untracked late in the second quarter as quarterback Anthony Luisi tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dom Eddings to make the score 20-7 at the half. Connor Leslie’s safety accounted for all the Wamps scoring in the second half.

Chamberlain paused for a moment as he assessed his team’s progress at the halfway mark in his first season at the helm.

“Overall I am pleased with the team’s development and response to a brand new system,” the coach continued. “It would feel a lot better if we were 3-2 rather than 2-3.”

Chamberlain is also happy with the development of the freshmen and junior varsity squad’s development.

“We have a lot of good things happening,” noted the coach. “Our staff is teaching every day.”

The Wamps will play host to Dedham High School this Saturday in another “home” contest held at Archbishop Williams Stadium.

Dedham is coming off a 49-19 thrashing by Natick High School.

Natick is led by their talented sophomore quarterback Troy Flutie.

“Dedham has some skilled people and play a very tough three-five stack defense,” said Chamberlain.

“We proved that we have some good bounce-back capability with our win over Wellesley,” said the coach. “We have a full week to prepare and I am confident that the guys will respond in kind against Dedham.”

Game time is 1 p.m.
