Flyers splash Red and Blue 101 to 79

In a high energy meet between two rival towns, Framingham finished first in every event other than the 50-yard freestyle, and swept the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard relay and the 100-yard backstroke.Hunter Olson started Framingham’s first sweep, winning the 200; he also won the 500-yard freestyle. Josh Jacobson won the 100-yard free. Nate Courville took backstoke, Josh Herzberg won the 100-yard breaststroke and junior Tim Long won the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard butterfly.

Long won the IM by the largest margin of the night. Long led throughout, but the race started off close. He pulled ahead during breaststroke and won by about half a pool-length with a time of 2:11.59. Classmate Zach Wong came in last in the race, but dropped eight seconds for a new personal best of 2:40.54.

“A few kids that have been working really hard did drop some time,” said Pereira. “A lot of the time, you don’t see success right away but there were big drops in couple of kids’ swims.”

Long’s was one of two big improvements for Framingham. Sophomore Henry Von Kelsch raced backstroke for the first time. He swam a 1:18 at time trials but shot off the block, leading through the first 50 yards. Von Kelsch finished third with a time of 1:07.48.

Natick also had several personal bests. Dube took second in the breaststroke with a time of 1:09.42, cutting off some time as he looks to qualify for sectionals. Morgan Connelly swam a personal best in the IM, as did Samuel Anderson in the 500. Graham King swam butterfly for his first time and finished with a time of 1:05.80. Max Nottonson also scored a personal best in the 1-meter dive.

“They get up for the competition and Framingham is a fast team, so we usually swim well,” said Power.

Last night’s swim meet was one of the first athletic events for Natick since the death of senior hockey player Justin Bailey. The captains asked for a moment of silence in his honor before the start of the meet.
