After attending his grandfather’s funeral earlier in the day, senior forward Austin Nichols scored the game-winning goal with 4:30 left in the third period to lift visiting Framingham to an emotional 2-1 victory over Braintree in a Bay State Conference matchup last night at Zapustas Arena.
“This was a special thing for me as a coach to see,” said Framingham coach Paul Spears. “It’s awesome to see that happen. I’ve coached a lot of hockey games and that was special. His grandfather came to all of our games.’’
With Framingham (6-8-2, 6-6-2 BSC) trailing 1-0 after one period, sophomore Matt O’Leary scored his first varsity goal to tie it midway through the second.
Goalie Al Lynch made 28 saves in the win and the Flyers had 18 shots on goal.
Framingham needs six points in its final four games to make the postseason.
“This was a cornerstone game,” said Spears. “We finally beat a quality team.”
